The Saints Are in Cap Hell đź’°

Salary Cap Hell

You’ve been told the horror story of the colossal QB deals the Browns and Broncos are stuck with…

  • Watson (5 year $230M, guaranteed)

  • Wilson (5 year $240m, $160m guaranteed)

But for some reason, nobody has mentioned salary cap catastrophe going down in New Orleans.

Now it is normal to enter an offseason over the cap.

9 teams will be over after this year:

NFL deals aren’t guaranteed which makes it manageable for GMs to get their teams under the number.

They routinely restructure or eliminate contracts to get there.

It’s all pretty standard….unless you’re the Saints.

Now if I told you a team was $89 million (37%) over the cap…

You’d imagine they’re loaded…not struggling to go .500.

The Saints highest cap hit is Derek Carr at an ugly $35 million:

You might be thinking to yourself, well that’s easy quick solution…

Dump Carr and things will be fine.

This is where things get wild.

First off, dumping new contracts isn’t that simple.

There’s dead money involved, but let’s pretend the Saints could just wash their hands and be down with Carr…

(And his 4 year $150 million deal, that they gave him earlier this year).

They would still be over the cap by $54 million.

It would still be by far the most in the league, or in other words…

$9 million more than the Chargers, who come in 2nd.

Not only are these numbers disastrous, but I haven’t even factored in draft picks who require new contracts.

In reality, the Saints need to clear somewhere in the range of $95 to $100 million off their books before next season.

Expect New Orleans to look very different next year.
