Playoff Expansion Is Not A Good Thing đ
Sports Inflation
You have been tricked into believing that more playoff teams is a good thing.
I agreeâŠFSU got a raw deal.
Do not let that distract you from the fact that Sports commissioners have created their own version of inflation.
Instead of currency, they inflate the playoffsâŠand the real loser is you.
Leagues figured out a long time ago the best way to make money is TV rights.
More specificallyâŠplayoff rights.
Leagues make billions on these games, but you have to understandâŠthey donât operate like normal businesses.
A normal business (big or small) suffers through hard times.
When COVID struck, leagues and owners were faced with the real possibility of losing money on a season.
But just then something dawned on them.
They didnât have to weather the storm.
They realized they were unintentionally gifted the PERFECT excuse to make more money.
They could tell the fans they NEEDED to make up for losses during lockdown by expanding the playoffs.
Most of them did:
The NFL added a 7 seed
The NBA added a play-in tournament
The MLB went from 10 to 16 to 12
College Football hung tough for a while, but eventually folded.
Next year theyâre going completely overboard with a 12 team playoff.
AgainâŠwe the fans are the losers here!
College Football is incredible, but not because we get to watch Liberty make the playoff and get blown out as a 12 seed.
Itâs because the regular season is do or die. You can feel the urgency every weekend.
There is direct correlation between playoff expansion and regular season intensity.
Itâs not a coincidence that the NBA regular season doesnât seem to matter.
They invite 67% of the teams to the dance despite the fact that 98% of franchises that have won the titleâŠdid so as top 3 seed.
Look at NFL 7 seeds.
In the 3 years theyâve been around, theyâre 0-6 and 4 of the games have been borderline unwatchable.
We should only let teams into the playoffs who have a legitimate shot at winning.
Anything more devalues the regular season, but the commissioners and owners donât care because theyâll make more money.
