NBA Offense Is Out Of Control

NBA Offense Is Out Of Control

I like offense as much as you…but this is officially a problem.

The Pacers are leading the NBA with 126 PPG and the Blazers are last with 104 PPG.

If this were 2003, your last place Blazers WOULD RANK 1ST!

I was just as shocked to learn the Mavs led the league that year with 103 PPG, but upon further investigation…it’s not so complicated.

‘03 was the last year the NBA allowed the hand check (which sounds aggressive, but all it really means is you can put hands on your man when guarding the perimeter).

It’s hard to believe in 2023 (when you see players like Jaylen Brown signing for $60m/year, but back then the NBA was struggling.

After Jordan retired the NBA was losing money and needed a new way to excite fans. Their answer was more offense.

They removed the hand check and their wish was granted.

From ‘91 through ‘04 only 4 players managed to average 30+ PPG.

We have 4 guys (Embiid, Durant, Doncic, and Curry) doing it together in 2023!

The league’s pool of shot makers and creators has never been deeper - it’s a big reason why they feel comfortable expanding the league to Seattle and Vegas.

Again…I like offense, but the hand check removal is antiquated. Baskets are more meaningful and valuable when they’re harder to come by.

It’s time the NBA brought back the hand check and allowed their guys to play grown man physical defense again.
