The NBA Awards Are Broken 🏆

Make Awards Make Sense

We need to either cancel

We need to either cancel the Most Improved Player award…

Or someone needs to tell us how it works.

Above are the 3 finalists.

2 of them have attributes in common…

  • They weren’t studs last year

  • They’re not a lock to win this year

If you remember, the same exact situation played out 2 years ago with Ja.

It even got the point where Ja mailed the trophy to his teammate (Desmond Bane)…

Because he felt like it made more sense for him.

He was right.

Just like Maxey this year, Ja averaged 20 the year before winning.

I’m not trying to take anything away from Maxey here.

He’s a better player than Coby White and Sengun…but that’s not point.

The award is supposed to be about improvement.

Coby White started 2 games last year and averaged 9 points.

He seemed destined for a career as a rotational guy.

This year he averaged 19 and led the Bulls to the play-in.

Sengun averaged 14 and 9 last year.

His 21 and 9 this year has been so great that if we redrafted the 2021 rookies…

He might go #1 overall.

Sadly this type of confusion isn’t exclusive to Most Improved.

We can have the same exact conversation about MVP.

It shouldn’t be hard for someone at the NBA to take 10 minutes and define words like “Valuable” and “Improved” on the official website.
