Mike Tomlin Taking A Year Off? 🤔

Mike Tomlin Taking A Year Off?

Reports from FOX’s Jay Glazer imply Tomlin could “take a year off” following the 2023 season.

Let’s zoom out.

32 head coaches started the season.

Tomlin is often praised as of part the elite crew, but the Steelers have been anything but elite for 6 years.

Now if it was 3 or 4 years, I wouldn’t write this…

But 6 is very significant.

Tomlin is the not so proud owner of the longest playoff win drought of all the coaches who started 2023.

That’s a nice way of saying…nobody else has managed to keep their job after winning nothing for 6 straight years.

Come Sunday this streak could easily be 7….or it could evaporate.

I’ve been critical of Tomlin and for good reason…

Unlike a lot of casuals, the Titans sending to the Steelers to the 7 seed with a win over the Jags didn’t give me amnesia.

Tomlin starting Trubisky for 3 straight weeks (with Mason Rudolph on the roster) was the worst coaching maneuver of the season.

In fact it was generationally bad.

The Steelers became the first winning team in NFL history to drop back-to-back games to teams 8 or more games below .500.

Tomlin loves to repeat his favorite phrase, “The standard is the standard”.

I speak for huge group of Steeler fans when I say, we’re tired of the circular phrases and political responses at the podium.

We want results, because for the last 6 seasons, “the standard” has been a middling team with zero playoff wins.

Maybe that’s acceptable if you’re the Jets or Cardinals, but not the Steelers.

Let’s zoom back in.

If Tomlin goes to Buffalo and wins (which I hope he does) the whole conversation shifts and he’s back.

If he doesn’t, maybe he should “take a break”.
